(other things to consider buying versus renting that's hard to put a price tag on)
We've own a Used Cruise America... Majestic for more than 7 years, no problems. Maybe $2,000 total in fixing stuff (front end was $1,000 of it) Rest was tires and other wear items. I don't pay storage, Don't know cost of insurance at moment. But perfect traveling machine at least for us. But it is not big enough for longer trips, again that's us. But others don't mind being together for long time. So we also own 30 foot trailer for the 3 and 4 month trips.
Our little Majestic has been very good to us. There a lot of times we use it for things that are not even on the radar. Sure nice to be able to fire it and go. It's in your driveway, just start it up and go. Like just getting away for couple days at a spur of the moment thing. Going down to a park for the day or watching your fishing pole from the RV window sipping on your favorite drink sure just has a nice feeling about it. When we had a death in family. Whole family comes in from all around country. In-laws house more than completely full, nearest motel is 15 miles away and not that good. Sure came in handy parked at their house, but at same time we could get away from them in the RV. Even the A/C came in handy when carting all the flowers around. I must admit though an RV looks pretty strange mixed in with all the cars when going from Church to grave site:B
Couple years later visiting same in-laws and their neighbors property was closing escrow. He had a on-site butcher there to clear out the some cattle that were not a part of the deal. A freezer wouldn't fit inside door (or window) so I built a plywood box the size of the folded out sofa and put it on top of it and dry ice for way home. We came home with about 3 years supply of beef for about 70% less than buying at store. Those are some examples of what your giving up by not buying. For your life style an RV might have different examples. But it sure comes in handy for a "get away".
Just wanted to point out some other reasons to own vs rent that are hard to put a price tag on.
(wife just read what I wrote and added)
Going thru a small town in late summer, farmers had fruit and vegetables and prices way less than store. We picked up a good supply and canned for a week in a campground.
So in your money equation somewhere don't forget things that are just nice to do when you have a RV sitting in your driveway ready to go.
OH ya, almost forgot, comes in real handy when elec goes out in winter storms.
(edit part) Just saw you mentioned Military. We've been at several Fam Camps that people were there for school or TDY. Some didn't charge them for parking when they were there if they stayed in the overflow or the boondocking area.
