If you buy a portable you will save a little money but, you will not have the convenience of a built in generator.
But, if you will not use it often a portable may serve the purpose. Depending on where you are boondocking or using the generator, you may want to consider an Inverter type generator. They are generally quieter than an open frame generator.
I also have a 96 Southwind with the ONAN 5000. It's nice to be able to run the generator while driving. And, it can be started from the drivers seat.
Do you have the model with the tag axle and slideout? If so I want to be your friend.
