Contrary to the majority of others, I think what you're proposing is entirely workable. I think your RV in essence has two separate 120V systems: one, the 30A side, that's typical of 30A RVs, and the other a single 20A circuit dedicated to the air conditioner that only goes to the generator. Connecting a split phase generator up to these two circuits, with appropriate overcurrent protection, is basically just replicating what was there previously. It would also be not significantly different than having a breakout cable and powering two 30A RVs from the generator, one on each leg.
I think you'd be less than satisfied listening to a typical big box store construction generator all day, but that's a different matter. If you're boondocking, you presumably don't have to care about other people listening to it all day. I personally think repairing the existing generator would be a better and more convenient way to go; but what you're describing sounds not unreasonable to me.
