Replace windshield roller shade with brand: ???

So the windshield roller shade motor failed in our Newmar. Oddly enough there was no literature on that component, although it seems we have it on every other system in the coach. Looks to be AutoMotion from what I can see comparing it to online literature. I see that Automotion does not sell replacement motors, and since this one failed at 3 years of age I'm contemplating whether the same company should get any more of my money. I see there are people out there who've rigged up motors from Rollertrol, but that seems to be more fabrication than I want to bother with frankly.

So therefore my question- any recommendations or reasons to choose MCD rather than AutoMotion, or perhaps United Shade? Those are the names I've come up with searching past threads.

I'm more concerned with reliability, quality and serviceability than just price. If we were on a trip and had to deal with this failure it would be quite a bother.

Thanks for your advice.

  • So the skinny is that AutoMotion changed the motor design, and the supply of replacement motors of the previous design is gone. Of course they'll sell me a new complete unit.

United Shade via Blind Chalet says they can't do one this wide.

MCD sells the complete unit in the size I need, as well as components for future service if needed. So they'll get my business.

MCD and AutoMotion are similarly priced.
  • Thanks, Doug, I will give Tiffin a call. Guess I will call Newmar too and ask them what's the support for parts. It was late Friday when I completed the diagnosis, so I haven't talked with Automotion yet. Basing my thinking on the lack of support on their website and search results on several forums indicated they won't sell a replacement motor. MCD on the other hand makes it plain that they will.

Nut, I have seen a lot of positive feedback about United.

    Thanks!
  • Try Tiffin Motorhomes Red Bay Alabama to see if they still sell replacement Auto motion motors. Doug
  • Seems like it would be a pain in the butt to retrofit a different brand, unless you just can't get parts for the one you have any more.
