Replacing tires in pairs - where to start?

Newbie question here:

If I replace only two tires at a time on my new-to-me Class C, which do you recommend I start with?

I'm thinking inside rear would be the best place to have fresh tires, but a case could be made for the front, steer tires as well. Is it a problem to run mismatched (same size/brand, new & old) on the duals?

I may bite the bullet and replace all six (or seven) at once, but I'm weighing the options. The tires on it are Michelins, and are antique by RV standards. We're off to Discount Tire soon for an inspection and price quote. I don't plan to travel more than 100 miles from home this season.

Thoughts?

  • Find the lowest online price you can and take that with you to Discount Tires. I've done this twice so far and both times they were very willing to match the price with no hassles. I bought some tires a few weeks ago and the best price I found was from Discount Tires Direct. The local store had no issues with matching the price at $50 lower per tire. First time I bought Toyo tires from them and they just had to order them in even though it's a tire brand they don't sell.

On my car, I replace the two most worn tires, put the new ones on the rear and the old ones on the front.

On my RV, I replace all 6 at the same time. I don't replace them because they are worn, I replace them because they are old, and they are all the same age.

Here is a Michelin video showing why to put the new tires on the rear if only replacing two:

  • I would replace the steer tires. Or, all four rear tires.
If you replace the inner duals and the older tire blows out, it puts all the weight and stress on the remaining dual. It can damage the good tire.

I think it's best to replace all tires at the same time. Then, start saving for the next set. :(
