Funny, many people go smaller (28" vs. standard 32") due to cost of the blades, but I agree a slightly large area would be nice. Regarding the blades dragging over the glass, we have found the following to help:
1) Ensure the windshield is as clean as possible. We find Rain-X not only reduces the time you need the wipers on (the water kinda beads and runs off in a light rain storm), but it seems to provide a smoother surface for the blades and they wipe better.
2) Once the blades begin to age and rubber starts to dry out wipe them down with a rag and rubbing alcohol. Seems to soften the rubber and extend the life of the blades with no observed adverse impact.
