Road Trip from TX-CO-UT-CA

Planning a road trip from starting from Houston, TX with stops in southern Colorado, Utah, and then Los Angeles, California. I have a 30ft MH and will be towing with car dolly. Looking for some input regarding driving conditions like mountain driving, snow, and/or roads to avoid,..etc…. Any recommendations on sites to see or places we have to eat would be cool too. Thank you in advance.
  • For driving conditions get a copy of Mountain Directory West. For excitement do a Google search for `_______ tourism' and put the State, City, or area in the blank and read what is recommended. Seems to me you could spend all of that vacation time in Utah!
  • What time of year will you be traveling? A small section of that trip can (depending on route) take you through very harsh winter condition when conditions get bad. They can also impose a "4 wheel drive or chains required" and even the dreaded trailers, RVs or high profile vehicle ban. So, depending on when you're traveling, a more round-about route may be best to plan for.
  • Sounds like you are looking at US 160 to 491 to 191 then I-70 to I-15. IF so then Wolf Creek Pass is the only big pass, with La Veta Pass much lower but still a pull. The rest of that route does not involve any big elevation change, although a lot of rolling hills, until you begin to drop into the LA Basin.

Wolf Creek and La Veta are good wide shoulder roads with passing lanes and should not be any problem. Just long pulls up and long down grades with curves on WC.

Watch the weather and plan accordingly.
  • I'm heading to visit family for Christmas, so figured I can fit in a few stops along the way. Four Corners Monument, Horseshoe Bend, and Vegas are what we're considering so far. Thank you for input.
