I think I've mentioned this before in an RV.Net post, but in July 2010 when we went to the big Winnebago rally at their plant, my self and another friend of mine talked to a Mercedes Sprinter rep that flew in to the US just for the rally because of the introduction of the new Class A Sprinter units Winnebago was just introducing.
Any way, in asking him about idling these 3.0 diesels, he said one of the worst things you can do to that engine is to idle it for more than say 10-15 minutes at a time without driving it some distance to "clean things out". It clogs the DPF and the EGR valve.
Now initially he was referencing the 2010+ DEF equipped engines. I asked him about the prior 3 years of the 3.0 V6, 2007, 08, 09. He said it was worse on them because they relied more on the EGR to clean the emissions than the DEF engines.
He was hard to understand because of the German accent, but he was sure to check to make sure we understood what he was saying.
For me, that was all I needed to hear to clarify the idling issue with the V6 Sprinter engine.
