This might be the source of what you saw later Mumkin: http://sprinter-source.com/forum/showpost.php?p=177447&postcount=75
That is from the "Cautionary Tale - Idling and the near death of an '08 Sprinter" topic. I suspect the guys with the in town Sprinter delivery vans rarely get 50 mph+ highway runs. They idle a lot and move around town in traffic at slow speeds. The DPF gets prematurely clogged.
A key to "smart idling" (if there is such a thing) is making sure that a highway run follows the extended idling period as booster points out.
In October 2012 I contacted Sprinter Engineering Support re: extended idling on current model Sprinter vans and received this reply in email:

Per your request, with the SCR technology of our engines, we do not recommend idling a Sprinter for longer periods than 2.5 - 3 hours.
Even with the high idle engaged, you should not exceed the aforementioned times to avoid clogging the DPF or damage to the EGR valve.
Fyi, the fuel consumption is .4 - . 5gal. per hour of idling.
