Anytime you have a trim piece (or window frame) that "squishes" a sealer down, the correct repair involves removing the trim/frame and replacing the butyl sealer tape underneath it. 10 more years of trouble free sealing. It comes in different widths so measure. You will often need to build the screw holes back up with carpenter's glue and toothpicks.
