- msmith1199Explorer IISince it's the coast you want to see, what I would do is take a right on Geary Blvd and go to the Great Highway. Then you're back along the coast and there are places where you could park for the day and unhook the toad and see San Francisco. The place that comes to mind is Fort Funston except on a weekend. On a weekend the parking lot will be full. But during the week you should be able to find room in the parking lot for a motorhome and can probably leave it there most of the day while you explore in the toad. Another parking option is to turn onto JFK drive into Golden Gate Park off of the Great Highway. Street parking is allowed there and the road is wide and there should be a place to leave your motorhome. We used to park along JFK when we took bikes into the City and then road from there.
- Jack_KayExplorerOnce you are in the city, (when heading South) you will be on Park Precedio Dr until you pass through Golden Gate Park. After the park you are on 19th Avenue. For those sections stay in the center lane and don't worry about other cars. They will pass as necessary on the right or left. Headed North is the reverse, but holds true.
- deandecExplorerI made the southbound trip in July with 38'DP towing a Jeep GC.
We crossed the Golden Gate about 4:00PM on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
Lots of traffic but no problems.
I did learn to travel in the middle lane of the 3 lanes. The buses will stop for more than one stop light rotation in the right hand lane and it is difficult to go around them given our length. - msmith1199Explorer II

Can anyone tell me how the trip through San Fran on Hwy 1 would be? Planning a coast trip soon, wondered how the route through San Fran staying on Hwy 1 would be?
City busses make the trip multiple times in a day so an RV can do it too. - jsmartExplorerThanks for all the info.
- Executive45Explorer IIIPortions of Hwy 1 are length restricted to 40' and the CHP has been known to enforce it....CalTrans has a good map of the restricted routes throughout California....Dennis
- thgoodmanExplorerI just did it in June with a 45 footer towing a small SUV. No problem. Lanes are somewhat tight so watch your mirrors. I stayed on the coast highway when 101 turned inland and the road at the north end of the peninsula going east bound had a no left turn sign when I rejoined 101. I had to go an extra block and make 2 lefts and a right to get back on 101.
Also, at the spot where 101 turns away from the coast a few miles south of the north end of the peninsula there is a killer hill. Don't know the grade % but if you have a problem with your rig on steep hills, better look for an alternate route. - Section from Parkmerced to the Golden Gate bridge a little slow with lots of traffic.
Watch your time of day and day of week. I would go through on Suinday morning if possible.
