Sequoia - Bear Lock Boxes

The park guidelines require all food & scented items in the lock boxes. We have a Roadtrek Class B with closets. Did you place ALL your toiletries, mosquito repellent, pantry items, canned food, dry unopened food, snacks, dish soap into the locker? Much appreciated. What about sleeping with window or ceiling vent open? Bob
  • We would not with soaps, deodorant & toothpaste yes. Canned foods no. Dry unopened yes.
  • Bob, I keep everything you mentioned in my coach when in bear country! I always sleep with the window open. To me bears are like big dumb dogs trying to get food with little or no work. Just don't leave anything outside that they can get into regardless if food isn't in it, they like to tear stuff up. We travel with two dogs once they start barking the bear or bears leave.
  • In a campground in the Sequoias we had a bear visit us while we sat by the campfire. It stood right next to my wife. We all jumped up and put the fire between us and the bear. I yelled at it and it took off running.

We have stayed in Sequoia area three times and Yosemite several times. Each time we have seen bears. We never used the bear boxes while in an RV but have used them when tent camping.

I have seen several unoccupied cars broken into by bears after food but never an occupied vehicle.
  • I keep all of my food in the class A even in bear country. When I had my old TT, I did the same thing. At many camps we had bears visit our camp every night and never bothered us in the TT. DW says my snoring scares them off :)
  • We volunteered in Alaska last summer. We had 3 different bears visit us in 4 evenings. They all just sniffed around outside none approached the 5er. On another night I heard one but didn't bother getting up to investigate the next morning you could see where it had climbed up on the bear proof trash bin and you could see dirty paw prints on the storage building door where restroom cleaning supplies were kept.
