serpentine belt and hose replacements
When do you replace serpintine belt and radiator hoses on diesel engines? Last year I replaced all heater hoses & tank radiator hoses. Autos are generally 5 years.

would have been a better move to have a mobile mechanic come out and replace the belt and carry on your journey
Volvo's mobile mechanic was the guy who made the decision to have it towed.
