Shore Power Only Works When Engine Is On

My Class A Southwind has an issue recently that the generator AND shore power will only work if the chassis engine is running. Once I turn off the engine, within 30 seconds any shore power or generator will be cut off and no power is available for the coach.

  • Al,

I'm with Drew here. What you say makes no sense and basically can't happen. I suspect that the real lead issue is semantics and vocabulary.

Please take the time to describe the situation in as great a detail as you can. Tell us what does work and what not work and when and I will bet that someone here can point you to a place to look.

Before the depression, I got to do this a lot by VHF one part at a time. We can do this.

  • Are you talking 120V power, or 12V power, or both?

If 12V power, I would check the house battery disconnect and the house battery connections (and the house battery itself). Some converters won't work properly if they don't have a battery connected. So long as the engine is running, the battery isolation system keeps the chassis battery connected to the house 12V system and all works as expected.

If 120V AC power, I am clueless.
