Tried it both ways when we had a short queen. Fitted sheets will not work, so the DW used two top sheets, but this combo didn't work that good. Finally broke down and paid the big $$ they want for short queen sets and we were happy with this combo. Didn't want to go through that again so when I purchased my current coach, I made sure it had a regular sized queen bed.
