I don't have any slide-outs, but from what I've read and seen and heard, slide-outs are no more or less likely to have problems than anything else on/in an RV. Usage, treatment, build quality, etc. will all have an effect on potential problems also.
I chose an older RV, so slide-outs weren't an option. I am fine without. But, if I were going to buy new, I would base my choice of "to slide-out or not" on the following:
1. Can I fully enjoy the RV without extending the slide? This is a deal breaker for me. It's the same thing with hybrids and pop-ups - I don't want to have to open/extend everything just to get a soda out, etc.
2. Do I need the extra space? If I don't need the extra space, then the slide-out is just an unnecessary item that is subject to break. I believe in keeping things simple - less to worry about that way.
If the answers are yes, I'd get a slide. If one or both are no, then I wouldn't get a slide.
