Small Itasca and/or Winnebago Class A

We currently have a 2002 Itasca, 30 ft. Class C with 2 slides. Mostly we like it a lot and I'm thinking I want to stick with this company. But we don't have auto levelers and the outside storage compartments are too low to the ground for an old guy. In campgrounds I see units that are 27 to 30 feet with 1 or 2 slides. The Itasca models are sun something. Financially, we would need to stay below about 2007 or so. A free standing walk around bed and couch are priority and a dinette is preferred. I would prefer closer to 27 ft.and definitely not above 30. The Ford V-10 we have now seems great. For those of you out there with these units, what do you think of them?

  • One thing to remember is to eliminate the stooping to the lower compartments would mean a higher coach floor. I got rid of my Newmar Mountain Aire because the 6 steps up were my biggest problem. You may have to choose the lesser of 2 evils.
  • Appreciate the thought but don't see how rearranging stuff stored would help because all the outside stored items are for outside stuff and the inside for inside stuff.
  • I have checked on installing levellers. Wish I could remember the exact amount but it was a LOT. Several thousand I think. In a way it would be "cheaper" than trading but lot's of ways to look at that. If it cost 3 or 4,000 we might be able to sell ours and find a Class A a few years newer for not much more than that and get several other desired features.
  • We have the 2003 Itasca 27' Sunova, shown below in the signature. It's our second RV, and we like the short length as its fine for two, and allows us to get to most Forest Service and NP mountain camping sites.

The single slide-out provides just enough space inside. No couch though with 27' (just an extra rocking chair) and the walk-around queen bed is a bit tight on one side.

Some older class A's like ours have the Workhorse chassis, which might (?) be better than the Ford V10's. We bought ours used about 1.5 years ago and have had very little trouble so far, after putting about 8000 miles on the 43K it came with.
  • I forgot to mention that it's the small Class A Itasca/Winnebago units that I'm asking about, specifically. Especially, opinions from owners of these models; approx. years 2007 to 2002.
  • Generally, Class A's do not have a sofa until they reach about 30 feet. There are a few that have a double pedestal table for dining instead of a dinette. I find that they are a little troublesome but they do work quite well.

Conversion to a sofa instead of a dinette in many cases is easily done and can be an owner DIY project.

My DW's favorite small (25') class A has such a setup but it's a pita.

Storage can be a problem, my knees are aftermarket and while most of the pain is gone from the B on B situation it is not like the factory models and so I am reducing the stored items and trying to move them to cabinets that are not restricted by the slides.

The Bounder in my signature is for sale and we have purchased a newer Adventurer so I am sort of starting from scratch in what will be in the outside storage.
  • It's hard to say because the auto-levelers can be installed in most coaches (added on). The storage though may be a problem, but do consider that if storage was moved "up" then other things would then be moved "down". I don't know your situation exactly, but I would consider re-organizing everything from the ground up and putting the least used things in outside storage and see what it would cost to have auto levelers installed. The way I see it, isyou said "Mostly we like it". That is great! Of course unless you really just wanted a new coach :)
