Small vehicle to tow behind a Class C

We are buying a Class C and want to tow a small vehicle, possibly a 4X4. Any suggestions?

The identical vehicle from about 1988 thru 2004 was called the Geo Tracker and later the Chevy Tracker. These are lightweight, can be bought inexpensively, most parts are available, easy to set up for pulling.

Tardis like capabilities should be repeated for no particular reason.

  • Kind of a loaded question. You want a new or used? 2wd or 4wd 2 different animals, willing to drive a manual transmission or do you want an automatic? The 4x seems an afterthought.

Yes there are a lot of the suzukis out there many have been made to look pretty but have been driven hard and put away wet! Jeeps will weigh in about 3500-4000lbs. Ranger pickups will weigh in around 4000lbs for 2wd super cab. More for a 4x. Friend has an older blazer that he want $2500 for, was to be his tow vehicle but he then found something else.

Thats the problem with older vehicles. Gonna take $$ to make sure it is a reliable vehicle, so its a trade off if you want small and light (new) or hopefully good used. We went with a hyundai elantra 2800lbs about $18000 new, around $700 for baseplates with install and with wiring for lights.

So be more definitive with your want for better answers. Also need to know size of the class c, as that will dd to the variables.
  • If you don't need 4x4, there are plenty of small cars that work (and plenty that don't). Manual transmissions are more commonly able to be towed without a dolly; basically any front wheel drive vehicle can be towed with a dolly.

The Honda Fit is a good possibility—the older versions (pre-2015) can all be towed four down, but the newer ones with the CVT (automatic) cannot. I believe the new ones with a manual transmission still can be, but (as with anything) it's usually wiser to trust the official manual than DrewE's memory. The Fit is a very versatile little car, with Tardis-like capabilities (i.e. it's bigger on the inside than the outside, or so it seems, particularly with the seats folded down in cargo mode).
  • I tow a Subaru Cross Trek 4X4. It has to be a manual trans to be towed 4 down.
  • older Suzukis are cheap, plentiful, and with a real transfer case make an excellent choice.
  • You probably see more Jeep Wranglers out there than anything else. We tow one and enjoy it.
