Solar Advice

Hi All,

Looking to start boondocking more. In another topic I got some good answers on switching converters for a faster generator recharge.

While I was thinking about it, I thought.. Geez maybe it would make more economical sense to get a decent solar system with a good controller that could handle charging/equalizing/etc...

I currently have 220AH of power avail across 2x6v batteries.

How large of a solar array would I need to get decent charging with minimal generator use? I was thinking 200-240watts but that had no logic behind it.

Any recommendations on panels and online stores? What about controllers?

I don't have a budget yet as I have no clue where to start with that.

Installs look pretty simple as I am fairly handy. So I'd just be in the market for materials if this makes any sense to actually do.

I just hate being in a nice quiet campground and firing up my generator for 4-5 hours.

  • I have 150 watt panel MorningStar and TriMetric. I have no problem keeping full. we have been camping for 45yrs and don't need a lot. if you wish to run a lot of stuff, might need more watts.
  • About 220 watts for 220 amp/hrs is a good place to start depending on use.

Next is to figure out what fits where on the roof. You need space to prevent shadows from vents, antenna, air conditioner etc.

Then consider MPPT (high voltage) or PWM (nominal 12 volt). MPPT controller allows simpler series install and often lower cost 24v panels but the controller is a premium. PWM you can oversize the controller and add panels in parallel as needed.

If this is a DIY be sure to post the the primary equipment to verify all is compatible.

Some prices on panels and controllers can be found here. Pick up in Norco and save the shipping.

  • Most all campgrounds have electric.

I have 260 watts of solar panels connected through a solar booster to 460 AH battery bank and 2,000 watt Magnum inverter with 3 level charger. I have no problem unless the sun does not shine. It does not take long for the 100 Amp charger to recharge the batteries on a cloudy day.
