I agree. Corroded connections is a common culprit.
Remember that a HWT operates off both 12V and 110V, maybe at the same time. I am not certain, but if you have no 12V, the unit might not work when 110V is available.
It is that way with the fridge which still requires 12V to operate on 110V.
