When I replaced my tires about 2 years ago, I replaced the spare also. It is no older than the tires on the road. I consider it cheap insurance for my family's safety.
I don't carry a jack or lug wrench. I am not going to change my tire, but when roadside assistance gets there, the spare will be ready for them to install.
