Sportdeck steer axle

I saw a video of a Sport Deck with a Volvo set-up. The owner was talking about his unit being the only Volvo VNL in N. America with a 20K pound steer axle. With accompanying 425 steer tires.

Excuse my ignorance but why would anyone request such an axle and what are 425 steer tires? I know the 425 stands for tire size but why such larger tires? Why would one request this axle/tire set-up which, I assumed from his wording, is so unique?

  • It's necessary to stay under Federal DOT axle/ tire-width weight limits. That coach has a dry front axle weight of almost 16,000 pounds, and with the VNL chassis that probably adds even more. Then, once you pack....
  • Just checked out a few of the "Super-C' campers on YouTube......YIKES!

    V16/600HP/2050feet pounds torque...Arh-Arh-Arh!!!
  • A link to the video would help. When I put Sport Deck in YouTube, it came up with boats?

    Then I found this

I have no idea why he'd have a 20K steer axle, he only has a single drive axle. He couldn't get 20K on the front axles if he tried with as long of a wheel base as in this add.
