Squeaky hubcap

I just replaced my wheel covers with the bolt-on type and also noticed the "squeak". When I installed them I made sure I tighten them real nice and tight but now I think that is what the problem is, over tightening them.

After work today I'm going to loosen them up just a tad and see if it makes a difference.

If not then I'll just save up some $ for some Alcoa's :)

I use plastic bags too. I took the wheel simulators off and put them in plastic bags to store them. I got tired of the clicking and squeaking so they got voted off the RV. Yes, steel wheels flex and the heavier you are the more they flex. More flexing equals more opportunities for noise.

I've had success with a very thin film of wheel bearing grease on the seating surface of the hubcap or wheel cover. Not glopped on. Of course your judgment of how tight the fit is important. If marginal you don't want to lubricate the flying off process.

Ya know my simulators do the same thing, they creak and snap when going slow. I thought someone had put rocks or something in them so I jacked them up and spun them real hard and they made no noise :h.

I put them down and drove them and the sound came back so I had a friend put his hand on them while moving real slow and he could feel them flexing, I guess it is the nature of the beast. I will live with it, at least when I'm going slow I can't sneak up on anyone, that may be a good thing..

I like the looks of the shiny wheels on my RV, so it doesn't look like a Clamett Mobile :B, HEY NO OFFENCE to others that like the look of an off road vehicle. Just a personal preference.

The garbage bags were an easy way to see how black wheels look. The Rock my RV TV show paints all its wheels.

If you have a bolt/s that hold wheel cover on. I have found that over tightening it/them makes the covers squeak and click.
