Here is your answer. This is the first step and if you don't do this then you'll pay who ever fixes to do so.

Had a similar problem with a Chevy pickup truck.
After putting in a new starter......I discovered that the real problem was the "neutral safety switch".
When you notice the problem.....WITHOUT turning it OFF.....move the gear shifter to N and see what happens.
