In Florida private vehicle sales taxes are collected at registration/Title transfer.
Same for Texas. They will either use the actual reported sale amount, or an estimated amount from one of their files. Whichever is higher, of course.
I once gave my old vehicle to my daughter since no one would give me a decent trade-in on it. Put down the sale price as $10.
Went with her to the tax office, they took one look at the bill of sale, punched the VIN into the computer and showed us the 'Kelly Blue Book' page for that vehicle on the computer. She had to pay the sales tax on 'Low Wholesale' value of the car.
THIS is the reason Texas changed the method of sales tax value. It makes no difference what your bill of sale states. The Tax is calculated by the County Tax office from the Blue Book values. IF you have a clunker not worth Blue Book, you MUST document and prove it to try to get a lower registration tax. Doug
