OP, like you, we were a few months shy of full timing when we purchased our coach. We too, were in California with it's high sales/use tax. While searching for our coach, we began the process of transferring our residency to the State of South Dakota. First was transferring our banks, voter registration and all our credit cards. The tax folks are looking for your INTENT to establish residency, so you want to do just that. We chose Americas Mailbox because they are located in Pennington County which has no wheel tax. We also chose SD because of their low sales tax, 3% and no State income tax. We then purchased the coach and registered it there with no problems. We also had our stix n brix home up for sale. It all came together and we hit the road later that year and never looked back.
My advice is to explore all angles. What works for me or someone else may not work for you. Take into consideration things like your medical while deciding which state you wish to call your own...Medicare has better offerings in different States...best of luck.....Dennis
