Lots of people do it. You will need to be able to do without utilities, be prepared for intrusions (noisy traffic, customers) and be prepared to protect yourself if you choose the wrong neighborhood. Do not turn an overnight parking/stay into a campsite with chairs, grills, awnings, etc.
