Wal-Mart people are actual people too. I think by medical definitions at least.
Interestingly enough, I work in one of those small towns. We have an actual honest to god hardware store in the nice rustic downtown area. They also finally took the "No Blacks past this point" signs down in the high end residential area south of downtown 30 years ago or so. The masonry posts that held the signs are still there.
There are some rather nice RV parks around the area and it is beautiful. The actual people here will take your money and even talk to you some but they don't like you and don't really want you around. It's really too bad because this could be such a nice town and tourism could really revitalize downtown but the core of old southern ignorance and fierce independence is quite alive. It is getting better slowly of course.
Well, sorry about the downer! I'm not really sure why I went into all of that. I'm sure there are still some nice Disney-movie style small towns out there. If I had the lifestyle that allowed me to take my time and doodle around the scenic secondary highways at leisure, I would. Unfortunately, the working life and kids' school makes our trips completely destination oriented. For the millions of others like us, stopping overnight in a somewhat safe parking lot in the Motorhome makes TONS of sense.
