Yesterday as I started heading up over Mt. Ashland on I-5 Southbound I had a "Stop" light appear on my dash. Scaring the bejesus out of me, that's exactly what I did. I couldn't find an explaination for it either because of stress, or it just wasn't in any of my literature. There wasn't anything wrong according to my instruments and all my fluids were ok. It happened once more on the way to the top before I decided to creep up the hill. The slow crawl seemed to do the trick as I didn't have a problem with it the rest of the way up. Down hill and flat driving, didn't recreate the problem, but under normal driving conditions as I started up a hill and increased throttle pressure the light would come on. That's when I noticed that if I let off on the trottle pressure, the light would go off. I have a 2000 38ft. Monaco Dynasty with the optional 350 Cummins, 6 speed Allison. Can anyone explain what that light relates to and have any of you out there had a simular experience?

If you have an OBD (On Board Diagnostics) port, it should have stored a code. Take it to an auto parts store or garage and have them read the code for you. Once you have the code, it will pinpoint the problem so you can correct it. Quite often, it's a simple fix. Good luck.

I would guess that it has to do with an air cleaner that is plugged and not allowing the engine to get enough air in the intake.

I could be any one, or all three of the above... don't guess...get the code read and fix it...simple and easy...often it's an inexpensive and quick fix....Dennis

From the sounds of it, the fault occurs when you are stepping on the go pedal a bit harder than is needed to cruise down the flatlands. Air filter and especially the fuel filter that are on the verge of clogging up would cause this very behavior. Both are a relatively cheap fix.

I don't happen to have that very rig, but I do have a couple diesel vehicles and they both have done that to me. The Jeep goes one step further when the fuel filter starts to clog up: it goes into limp mode which requires an engine restart to clear. And "limp mode" is very limp indeed.

My "Stop Engine" light has come on twice. The first time it was when all the coolant was dumped into the oil pan when the engine blew, and the second time when the exhaust brake stuck momentarily. The codes will tell you what happened.

read OP message only does it on hills.If the filter was "clogged" it would loose power

Going up a hill low coolant, on level ground sensor reads ok, been there done that. Add a quart of coolant all is well.

OP said all fluid levels were OK so we have to assume that he did check them. OP also said that when he gives it throttle on a hill, light comes on. Lets off throttle, light goes out. I would think a low coolant issue would cause the light to stay at all times the coach was going uphill and that throttle position would not affect it.

Like I previously posted possible slightly low coolant when high RPM and circulating coolant harder.(possible senerio)

My brother told me of when the STOP light came on on his semi tractor.. And he did, but not before the engine developed a split personality.. he called his boss, then he called Detroit Diesel and a buddy dropped his trailer at the nearby truck stop and they doubled back to pick up little brother's (Well not so little, 6'6 1/2" tall) and the tow truck from double D was already there getting ready to take the tractor to a repair shop.> Double D air-freighted both a new engine and a technician/engineer and he was on the road within 24 hours again, For a Professional Semi driver TIME really IS money.

On my car I get Check engine (And thank you for the reminder) lights all the time.. I keep a reader on the debris tray (you know, the tray where stuff seems to collect) usually it's 455 (Evaporative Emissions control major fault,, No there is no fault, just a sticky valve) but hey.. Nice to knwo the code.

Iam not sure I understand the point of your post or what it has to do with the OP question?

Typical of that vintage is a stop engine light for the ECM oil pressure sensor to fail. Mine did. It will intermittently report low oil pressure which will set off the stop light. The oil pressure to the dash gauge is a separate sender. Cummins has a fix. Changed the sensor to a low pressure switch, with a ecm update and a wire to an ECM pin. ~$500 total.

who knows? sounds reasonable to me but why only when hot pulling a incline at heavy throttle?
