bobman....We've been RVing for 38 years and more than 175K miles, most of trips being under 1000 miles.....a lot of trips. We've had issues that I have had to repair on the road, but we've never been left stranded or had to be towed. I do all of my own repairs, which has been a bg factor in keeping us on the road.
If you're handy as you say, you'll be fine. RV's will break, both new and used. We create a list on each trip. Things that I need to repair and products like soap, toothpaste, etc that need to be restocked when we get home.
If I break a cabinet latch and don't have access to one, it goes on the list. When I buy the new latch, I usually buy two and keep one as a spare. My coach is my "Hot Rod" I never had and I enjoy working on it. Most of the things I list as needing repair are generally things I want to improve or add to make things easier.
We did a 6500 mile trip from coast to coast and back last year in our 2005 Monaco Diplomat. During the six week trip, the only thing that broke, was the mirrored wardrobe doors came off the track. I repaired them on the road and then did a rework of the mirror frames and rollers when we returned home. Most trips are trouble free.
