Suches GA

Hi there again. Our trip was great but we did deviate from the suggested route a little. After looking at the maps a little more and checking with Google maps I decided to just stay on 81 to 40 to 75 to 411 and then head down to Skeehan creek campground via 74/64 to 68 to 60. Rt 60 was "interesting" going in on Thursday but I think it was the time we hit it at early afternoon. Just a lot of traffic. Coming out on Monday was much nicer in the early am.

Only slow part will be 10 miles on 74 going through the scenic Nantahala gorge where they do a lot of rafting. Great little cafe at the outdoor center but hard to park with a big rig. Safe travels.

I want to thank everyone for the great responses to make my trip much more relaxed and I'm sure enjoyable. It's awesome to be able to come to a community with such great folks willing to help and answer questions. I'll let you know how our trip went when I get back. If anyone ever needs any info for southern jersey (south of the Delaware Memorial Bridge) hit me up. I can't wait to get down there. I absolutely love mountainous terrain, small to no towns, no major malls, laid back living. I hope to retire down that way some day (NC, GA, SC, AL, TN, KY) soon. I may even keep my eyes out for some property while I'm down there.

DW and I were at T.W.O in the fall of 2006, can't believe it was that long ago. The good news:
T.W.O has re-opened this year as "Two Wheels of Suches" New owner bought the property and has made many upgrades.. Two Wheels of Suches

Yes to 60/Murphy Hwy although it may be Alt 60. The above post is correct although the CG is well before Suches. Ivylog is an area on 19/129 before you get to the GA/NC line and many years ago there was a Post Office/general store.

In Murphy, go 4 lane west from town, US 64 & 74, go past US 19 - 129 toward Blairsville about 1 mile turn left on highway 60, a five lane road in NC. When crossing into GA, 60 will be 2 lane, just keep on 60 to Suches.
Going to Benton, go back 60 to Mineral Bluff, GA , keep straight toward Copperhill, Tn, to Ducktown, Tn, then take a left on US 64 - 74 toward Cleveland, Tn, then to Benton.

Going to 68 takes you about 15 to 20 miles out of way.
From your area just follow Ivy log directions.

Just one question, I see that rt 60 breaks off just after rt 19, 129, from rt 64, 74. Then it seems to turn into a "smaller" road called Murphy highway. Is this the road you suggested? It seems to get rather small on the map but looks to be straight as an arrow. OR...do I stay on 64, 74, 40 until I get to rt 68 (Ocoee st) and head south to 60.

It is not a fun ride from Dahlonega up and over to Suches. Too crooked an narrow for trailering and I would not drive my MH up that way out of respect for others on the road. MAYBE down from US129 near Vogel SP. Again there will be a lot of traffic on weekends any time during the summer.

Thanks, that's what I was hoping for. I realize near the campground will be windy which I have no problem with but I'm sure I could be on windy roads for hours not knowing where I was going. We are actually trailering off road street legal motorcycles (dual sports) and doing an event out of the campground. It's the Hooch dual sport ride. Then we are going into Benton TN for a week to ride on our own exploring the national forests for every dirt road we can legally ride.

That sounds like a good route to me as well. I've spent lots of time in the area, but mostly on a motorcycle. Hwy 180 out of Suches (which the route will not put you on) is the windiest road in Georgia, and until recently Suches was the home of "Two Wheels Only," a motorcycle camping resort, located there because it's in the heart of Georgia's twisty road country. Not quite as twisty as the Tail of the Dragon up in Robbinsville, but close. All of which is just a long way of warning you that the route south on Hwy 60 will have lots of turns, a few hairpin corners, and, depending on the day of the week, a fair amount of motorcycle loonies, riding around with their hair on fire. But, the route from the south is no better (maybe worse), so Hwy 60 is probably your best choice.
