Supercharge my motor

I was wondering if it is possible to supercharge my V10 Ford engine? I want more power when towing up hills.
  • I assume a super charger could be about $5K plus labor to install so I would call BANKS and see what they say you can get for $3 or $4K installed.

Could you be a bit more specific? You mean a tuning chip? Lots of different products on the Bankspoower web site you linked to
  • I'd direct this question to the Ford truck forums and see what the V10 owners are doing there. I've investigated this myself and I believe it to be doable but will not be cheap to do right. Just remember, you really won't need much boost to get the job done and that's good because that will put much less stress on the engine.
  • Depends on the year / HP of the V10. I had the original 275 HP in a class A and towed a jeep liberty and thought it was grossly underpowered. Friend had the one with 310hp and that little bit was a lot. Couldn't keep mine in over drive going into the wind. (New MEXICO wind)
  • Don't see any need for that at all with my V10. Goes up hills with a toad just fine. Does it slow down and downshift on steep grades, yes. But it's never a problem, that's what it's supposed to do.
  • Stargazzer,

Maybe look into nitrous oxide! Doesn't take up much space, can be used only when needed, and will give you a real kick in the pants when you do.

I personally don't use such on my motorhome, but a lot of street cars and race cars do.

    Just a thought.

  • There are two inherent problems when it comes to adding go goodies to a motor.
First, adding things like superchargers are generally only good at high RPM. For a MH you want the power at low RPM. Just the opposite.
Second, the weakest link in the power train then becomes overloaded. So if you were to add something like a supercharger, or a turbo charger, then be prepared to rebuild your transmission and possibly universal joints. Remember, your lugging around a lot of weight in your MH and trying to move it faster something is going to break sooner or later.
Just not a practical solution. You would be far better off lightening the load first.

    Well Sir,
While it's been done now and then, and of the ones I've seen in person, I've seen no devastating results from such an application. But, one of the problems in adding any form of "over aspiration" of a stock engine that's not designed for it is, you run the risk of engine damage due to too much compression. I'm certainly no engine designer or, engineer but, in many engines with either a turbo charger or, super charger that's factory installed, the compression ratio is lower, or so I'm lead to believe.

We'd all like more power up the grades and, it's too bad that there's no magic pill that will accomplish that goal without any form of side effects. Another problem is, finding cubic space inside that engine compartment to mount it. As you most likely know, there's not a lot of "extra" room in most of those engine compartments. Good luck.

P.S. I had the Banks kit on our previous coach, a '99 Fleetwood Bounder, 34V w/ the V-10. It was the 275 HP version and, while I never drove it before it had the Banks kit installed, I took possession of it after it had been. It was not a tire burning vehicle. So, I cannot attest to its performance before but, as we drove it, it was fine but, nothing to write home about.

  • Let your wallet be your guide. Ford Supercharger
Keep in mind that this is for a truck and may require a lot of modification to get it to fit in the limited space on an RV engine compartment. You also have to use 91 octane fuel instead of 87.
