Our Patriot Braking System hasn't broken two tow bars or ate up a set of toad brakes yet, while set on 2-3 (out of 5) sensitivity, like it's predecessor. That unit was rebuilt 7-8 times by the manufacturer in 7 years, several times at my expense (at least one way shipping $45-$50 depending UPS zone). I did send The Patriot back after the ram went out and wouldn't retract without unplugging the unit on set up. This was under warranty and all has been well for the last 5000 miles. We set our Patriot at "2" on the sensitivity setting without any problems. Why would you operate the braking unit without the breakaway switch installed? I suppose you were just setting it up on your toad. To me that is one of the prime features of any supplemental braking system.
