Yes, I would say the ecowise has more in common with an autoformer however the OP added "something better" I can not remember if the eco wise shut down when the extremes were met, I thought that it did. I still think I will need or should get a simple surge protector to protect the ecowise from a higher than 140 spike.
I found these technologies reading about solar and cutting edge products. One page led to another until I was thoroughly lost. That is why I mentioned solar. I believe there are smaller units manufactured that manage solar generated power to limit or omit power loss and larger ones where fields of solar collectors are used.
No one in the park that I knew of had an autoformer. It amazes me how many just plug in and go with the flow. (pun intended) One fridge after another hits the garbage as well as inverters and converters, not to mention air conditioners being slowly ruined.
And then there are those that know and can not do anything about it as the surge protector shuts off the power and they have to not use the surge protector.(ever wonder why some units have every light on, Christmas lights strung out and 4 extension cords?)
Hopefully Pianotuna will investigate this more thoroughly as he has background with this kind of stuff. I was just desperate to find something. I know nothing.
