Are they really necessary? I just purchased a new 2014 MH, with the LED TV's and DVD players, and other electronics I am thinking about the addition of a surge protector.....but is it really neceaa...

I have done "some" traveling, but will admit I am a novice, are the USA/Canada campgrounds really in poor condition?

Yes.
Just ask anyone that didn't buy one and their RV took a hit. Cost to replace appliances, AC, and electronics in an RV.....$3,000.
A couple of hundred bucks or even the 80 dollar surge protector is a small price to pay for the insurance. Just saying from experience.:(
