I use a Direct TV receiver with a Wineguard carry out. I too listen for the beeps. I use a compass first to get the aproximate elevation and azimuth direction to point the dish to.
Have a book with all the US cities zip codes. Enter the zip code in an on-line dish pointer apt for the elevation and azimuth. You only have to get an aproximate city/area.
