Too many unanswered questions;
IF a braking system had been installed (the article did not say one wasn't installed), and the breakaway had actuated, bringing the car to a stop in the highway, would it have resulted in a multi-vehicle pile-up?
If so, how many would have been injured or killed in said pile-up?
I would concede that it is possible that there could have been a pile up had the vehicle come off and stopped in the middle of the highway. I will also concede that sometimes seatbelts actually do more harm that good. But the odds in both of those scenarios are way in favor of an emergency braking system on a toad car and of wearing your seatbelts. It would be much better for a driverless car to have the brakes applied and stopped, than it is for it to head down the road at 55 to 70 or more MPH completely out of control. The odds are way in the favor of the runaway car causing more death and destruction than a car that stops on the highway or freeway.
