If you watch the video, the base plates are still securely attached to the front end. The front end is what separated from the car.
If you look at the picture that is with the video, it clearly shows the front end of the vehicle with the base plate that attaches to the tow bar. The video says that this was recovered TWO miles down the highway.
Something is just not adding up. If the front end was jerked off of the vehicle, it should have remained attached to the tow bar and not been free to bounce down the highway.
The car would be free but the front bumper and base plate would have stayed with the RV.
Another scenario is that if the tow bar pins came disconnected and the jerk on the safety chains yanked the front end off of the car. The base plate then came loose from the safety chains and was left on the highway.
It clearly didn't bounce down the highway for two miles. It remained attached to the motorhome as he drove two more miles down the highway. My guess is when the driver of the motorhome figured out that the car was missing, he pulled over to check and he probably removed the towbar from the front end and then went back to look for his car. You also notice in the photo the receivers are still there, but the towbar isn't. That means somebody had to have detached the towbar itself from the receivers. The media just didn't get the story right.
Edit: I went and looked again and I see the tow bar type he was using is one where the tow bar remains with the motorhome and attaches to the receivers on the baseplate with pins. So unless both pins failed after the frame member failed, then somebody removed the pins before that photo was taken and detached that part from the RV. And the fact that the two pieces are laying on the side of the road looking to be lined up appears to confirm that the RV driver took them off and left them there while he returned to look for his car.
That is what it looks like to me.
