I guess we all have different personal preferences, but unless you came to Colorado to see hoards of people, head west into the mountains. See the Arkansas River from a white water raft, see Cottonwood Pass, see the Maroon Bells, drive up Mt Evans or Pikes Peak in your towed, catch a trout in the Rio Grande River, climb the highest sand dunes in the country near Alamosa, soak in the hot springs at Pagosa, visit Lake City, Silverton, Ouray, rent a Jeep and drive up Engineers Pass, visit the least visited national parks - Mesa Verde & Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and if you have time to get to the western side of the state, visit the Colorado National Monument and Dinosaur National Monument. You'll find a good combination of commercial, state park & National Forest Service campgrounds all over the state.
I agree, tour southwestern Colorado to get away from hoards of people. Rocky Mtn. Nat'l Park is nice if you can get reservations.
