As mssmith said above, an exit strategy is as important as any other decision here.
The "tag axle" adds ten thousand pounds. What was a 33,000 lb coach becomes a 43,000 lb coach. That is a LOT. It's the differents between a 10k and a 20k tow rating. It's also the difference between a 3 ton and an 8 ton load capacity.
If the family you might spend time with is your offspring and grandchildren, then if it is practical, just pay to have a 50 amp rv outlet installed at their home. Done.
If that is not practical, consider spending much of your stay at a local campground. The grandbabies will love it.
Do your math on power. One thing I don't see mentioned here is your converter/inverter (battery charger!) Ours is a 100 AMP charger! If the batteries are down when we first plug in, it sucks 12 plus amps of (the 15 amp circuit my adapters and extension cord are plugged into) Thatsa bunch.
As we camp more and more with our 16yo son, I really start wishing for that bath anda half. Twice last weekend he was parked in our only bathroom and I had to go. It was.... well u know.
I personally would never buy a new motorhome. I'm handy, and can fix things that need to be fixed or upgrade things that need upgrading, and actually enjoy doing it. Our knight was 3 years old when we bought her. She's been a real gem, virtually problem free. And out the door for $100k less than brand new.
