When we began full-timing 16 years ago we had no exit plan.
We sold the 3,000 sq ft house, socked away the money, invested well, and it has paid off greatly over the years. Sixteen years later we have now bought a small 1100 sq ft townhouse in a very active adult community. It came completely furnished in good taste as most of homes that sell here do. We didn't need to buy anything and so glad we didn't have a storage unit all these years.
Twenty-two friends who have all full-timed for approximately the same length of time, and who we met while full-timing have now bought in this same community - all furnished homes. We are like family and help each other, if needed. We have so many activities to partake in that our days fly by. We will spend our winters here but kept the motorhome for traveling the other seasons.
While full-timing we have had some major surgeries, including cancer. An RVer can go for treatment to the best medical facilities in the country. It's very easy to recoup in an RV. Even a physical therapist will come to the RV for your treatment. Medical issues on the road are not issues.
We belong to the Escapees RV Club and if one needs short or long-term care the organizaltion has a CARE facility at their headquarters whereby you stay in your RV, have your house cleaned, laundry done and meals are available. Light nursing care is given along with a day area for activities. Transportation is given for doctor appts. We didn't have to use it but knowing it's available is great.
As far as buying rental property when you first begin full-timing with the intention of living in it when you stop, think out a few things beforehand.
After traveling and getting to live in so many wonderful places, will that rental property be the place you'll want to live? We would never go back to where we left. Instead, we found our ideal resting place.
Do you want to maintain that rental property when you're not there?
If you have really serious medical issues you probably wouldn't be able to live in a house again..or on acreage. You have no idea what your circumstances will be in the coming years. Why not just invest the money now for when you need it later?
Even if you have little money, you could always park your RV without driving around. Or you could buy a small Park Model trailer in an established permanent park. They aren't expensive.
That's just our thoughts and in no way is it right for everyone. However, think about the 'what ifs'. It worked well for us (and for our twenty-two friends who have done the same) and we don't regret doing anything differently.
