You are getting a lot of responses so keep asking and reading.
Overall buying an RV isn't rocket science but it does take some common sense! I'd suggest hitting every dealership you can find and travel a long ways to hit more! Drive every brand and model you can find, sit in them a while to get a feel for them.
I think I would go used and keep in mind they will continue to depreciate. Buy the best you can afford. I think you find any coach that is at least 38' will give you the enough room to not feel cramped but the longer/more slides the more to push down the road (less mpg if that means anything to you), back into tight spaces, turn into parking lots, etc.
As others have very technically explained you can't just drive up to a friend's house and plug into a reg. house outlet and use every function in your coach. A few lights, the refrigerator, the TV or microwave can be used while plugged into that amp circuit. No AC, water heater needs to be on propane, and the TV and micro cant' be used at the same time. You have to remember your onboard battery charging unit will be running all the time to keep them up so that takes away power for other items. Just convince all your family and friends to put in a 50 AMP circuit and plug for you :W
I would invest in a good GPS/map program to put on a computer to help you plan routes so you know the roads that are less RV friendly/have low clearances, etc. Then ALWAYS double check on a hard copy map because no GPS program is 100% correct all the time.
