Thoughts on new Ford Transit Passenger Van for Conversion

Advice Needed on the Ford Transit Passenger Van vs. Mercedes Sprinter conversion.

Have a price from Sports Mobile for van & conversion in the $90K range. With the Ford Transit Van, I was thinking of purchasing the van and making conversions myself a little at a time. The price difference between the two is substantial(which is important to our family). However, not much info out there on the Ford.

The vehicle would be for a active sports family of five for day trips and daily use.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • Classbforum.com and fordtransitusaforum.com are two places that tend to have fairly detailed discussions on vans because of their specialty.
  • This has been discussed for a bit on here and the Class B forum.

The Transit has a lot of the niceties of the Sprinter. However, it can be around the same price as a Sprinter, especially with a diesel. The EB gasser is definitely cheaper.

I mentioned this in other threads, but if I were going to have a Transit upfitted, I'd buy the high roof, long body model with the EcoBoost gasser engine. This will allow me to have either ceiling space for a drop-down bed or, a false floor. The false floor would allow for more space for batteries (would have to be AGM), water tanks and appliances, and if used as a plenum, would help with camping in below freezing weather, assuming the furnace could use the space for return air flow, and air did go around the tanks.
