As many have stated, with "normal" wide 4-lane roads I haven't had a problem entering deep and turning gradually.
Just spent 3 days in-town on very narrow older streets, with many sharp 90 degree turns onto tiny narrow 2 lane side streets. I became aware of this (real) issue on this specific trip.
Blocking traffic is neither necessary 'nor advisable under most circumstances; but under very tight turning maneuvers it may prevent a mishap. Sorry the OP wasn't more clear about the circumstances requiring these extraordinary measures.
