To my knowledge the only foreign tires that Michelin allows in this country (U.S.A.) are from Canada and that is only due to tire shortages by agreements with Unions. I was told this by a person from Michelins Corporate Office.
USMC46 - I agree with your comment that Michelin likely makes the best tires. However, Michelin makes tires in many countries. My front former steer tires were 315 22.5 and made in Spain. After 4 1/2 years I replaced the tires as they were worn out. On those Michelins the sidewalls were somewhat oxidized. I had four drive tires of the same age also Michelin. Those were 295 22.5. Those were made in the USA. I replaced those after 5 2/3 years. Absolutely no sidewall oxidation on the USA made tires. I do not think the Spanish made Michelin's were unsafe, but my point was the rubber compound was obviously different.
It is possible that Michelin will impose strict quality control for their China factory. Apple has done a great job of getting great work from their factories there. But when I buy Michelins in the future I am going to look for the Made in USA label.
I will take it on Face value what you say is true. The only thing I would like to mention is that this can change at anytime. But there is nothing implied that Michelin will let these tires be a "lesser quality" than any tires produced elsewhere.
