Tires

Yesterday, we had the rear tires changed on the Mh.
The new Michelins 275x80x22.5.
The old GY670s had no checks and the rubber was as supple as the day they were put on, with just some road dirt on tires with sides facing each other, and bit of shoulder wear on one tire.
I can't help wonder if they wouldn't have went another 13 years.
The tread wqs about as deep as new.
I was told by the Salesman that the new tires were guaranteed for 7 years. The Mgr said there is no general life on mfg defects.
No warranty on checks etc. Said that was normal.
Salesman again said most Mhs because of the way they are used life is expected to be about 7 years or so. generally the tire should last about 10 years. The 7 years was on semis which are driven about every day. And the casings are good for two recaps.
Price with FMCa was 2860.00 and change with discount was quoted 2784. then when we had signed the paper, he said the actual total would be a little more when it came out of our account because of cost, of tires. Excuse me. He told us it would be a little less than quoted, over the phone.
They didn't have a wrench to remove center caps, but we did but couldn't find it.Sp pliers and rag. Two new caps about 7.00 coming up.
He said they did a lot of motorhomes and when I went in he asked which motor home he had three coming. Yeah right.
Asked him when we left why he didn't have wrenches for the center caps, oh that would cost me thousand of dollars for wrenches for all the different ones. Huh?
The Guy needs to be pushing a broom instead of manger of a Michelin Co store.
Said they would see what they could do when we called, about washing some salt off rims in between form a dealer in Indiana.
Got there oh we don't do that. We don't even have a hose out there.
No cooperation. So well I will get the windex and wipe them. Can't get back in the coach, safety thing.
So 16 ply Michelins all round and ride is smoother. Will have to adjust air pressure. 105 in rear and 90 in front right now. Lot of footprint.
120 lbs on sidewall.
Not sure what to set them at. Totally different sidewall etc from Goodyear

  • I can't stand buying tires. So many variables and potential rip offs. Also they are pricey. I never pay attention to warranties because I ALWAYS seem to get ripped off. If it is advertised a 60k mile tire, 25k max. They won't warranty or they'll give a ridiculous credit. I've learned to bite the bullet and just cringe when I buy tires. It's better after I leave the tire shop. All I can suggest is look for 4 tire rebates, and any incentives you can find.
  • Always ask the tire dealer how much credit they will give you for your old tires. I usually get anywhere from $75-$125 per tire. Be aware that some dealers will charge you a "tire disposal fee" and then make additional money by selling your old tires. Some States require the tire disposal fee but your dealer can offset it will a credit for your tires. I have never failed to get a credit for my old tires that are still serviceable.

They charged 98.50 plus tax per tire to mount and balance and damage my whell center caps. And mislead us on things.

Cost of tires was 550.00 down from 684.00 list. Twenty two hundred for tires.
675.00 for mount balance, tax and take old tires. Should have been 300 or no more.
The Mgr was talking about making what they needed, to someone. Well he did. He won't many more.
Now, I understand what you were talking about! It was disappointing reading what they were charging for mounting etc. and there making money off the tires on top of it.

  • Down Home, there is no set years on how long a tire will last. Michelins Website on tire quality care will help you get extra years out of your tires. I've alway's got at least 10 years out of my Michelin tires, but I will admit I had the tires broke down and inspected. This gives me peace of mind and I don't mind paying the extra cost. On your Michelin Tire Bill my bill was very expensive due to the truck tire shop that Michelin sent me too didn't know how to process the FMCA / Michelin Fleet Tire Program paperwork. Michelin had to cancel the entire tire transaction in my case. Michelin told me that I had to contact them first with my credit card # before going to the tire shop! I did not know this prior to the purchase.
  • $2860 for four tires comes out to about $1.65 a day and you get to enjoy the safety and comfort of new tires..:)...Dennis
  • We are fuming over the bill right now. Loves without FMCA out the door 2840.00.
It look like the Dealer took measures to get the FMCA discount into his pocket.
May be in Chancry court over this. Certainly FMCA and Michelin National will be hearing from us.
Should have went with Loves and waited a week.
  • Wow, 13 yrs. on that set? The damage a blow-out can cause is worth a 7 yr. change-out to me. But, everyone has their comfort level.

It drives me nuts when you go into a store (any kind) that specializes in a product and they don't know what they are doing. You just want to slap them upside the head!

    Safe travels,
    MM.
