To Cover or Not To cover

I am debating getting a cover for my sightseer. I currently park under some pine trees and am getting tired of climbing on the roof every couple months to remove the pine sap before it hardens too much.

What are peoples experiences with covering their motorhome, advantages, disadvantages... any types of covers to stay away from or that work really well?
  • What Blaster Man said X2.
my RV is also under pine trees. the roof and slide topper ARE covered with black sappy mildew. It is hard to clean, almost impossible. But who cares?
I covered mine twice. I probably won't cover again. The wind is tearing the cover in places since my 34' rig is 4' short of using the entire length, so on windy days and nights there is lots of slack flopping despite all my efforts. even the tied-down bottom sides are ripping at the grommets.
Pulling that heavy monstrous thing up and over is dangerous! too many expensive things to step on/through or trip over, and an 11' drop to concrete if I go over.
Not worth it in my neck of the woods in my opinion. Wind and Sun are the problems here. Go for a rigid cover if possible.
PM me if in my area and I'll make you a race-horse deal on a BIG cover! B+ condition.
  • You always have the option of using a tarp just for the top of the roof.
  • Covers are a lots of trouble...expensive, big, heavy, cumbersome, dirty, hard to get up and on the roof, hard to put on, rub spots on the RV/get holes rubbed in them, have to store them someplace when using the RV, etc. Covered storage is much better and worth every penny.
  • I hate covers, they are such a pain to put on / off. And, they are usually dirty and not pleasant to deal with. If you are parking for several months, then do it, but otherwise, skip it.

I much prefer a fixed structure. For mine, I have a tarp covered frame that is just a little bigger than the RV. When I park, I just back in and then strap a small tarp over the front for a little extra protection.

Some day I hope to have a real RV garage, but for now this does fine.
  • This is my second winter with my rig. The first winter, we had no cover. This year, we have it covered with an ADCO. After lots of consideration, I think a cover is a wise investment, and we don't have to deal with tree sap.
  • Haven't you already provided enough incentive to cover your rig? Search this Forum for `rv cover' for more advice.
  • I built a solid cover over my old 5th wheel which worked well and now have a larger motorhome which I use an Adco complete material cover. It is fairly heavy to put up there and set up but does a good job keeping the rig out of the elements. Ideally a full size sold cover makes it easy to get in and out anytime.and protects it from the weather and any falling tree stuff.
  • I vote for a cover. Not difficult to install, helps keep unit clean. Especially if you're parking under trees.
We get a lot of winter wind in our area.
Secure it well, the wind will try to remove it.
