To cover or not?

I have been covering my 40 foot 1998 Safari Serengeti for the last 10 years or so when in storage. I rarely see anyone else that covers their rig. The sun in Arizona is tough on everything but the work of covering, plus the danger of being on the roof with a heavy and awkward bundle is making me rethink. Plus, I have not found a lightweight cover that last more than 3 years. Am I being an overachiever and worrying too much about sun damage? Anyone have experience with this, good or bad? Thanks for any feedback.

  • I've always covered mine. It's an old 1992, and the stickers on the side look new. I gets lots of compliments at campgrounds and it really does look nice. It's a choice to cover it, takes some work, but the sun will destroy your rig over time if you don't keep it covered. The rig will survive uncovered, but it won't look nearly as good as the same rig that is kept under cover.

it is a waste of time to cover your rv....

you mean your too lazy to cover your rv. why is it a waste of time. Ive seen rvs that are four years old hear in michigan that are not covered and look like hell. I have a friend that has an older pace arrow that keeps hos covered and it looks new
  • Look at Sunshield tarp to cover the roof and parts of the sides. Much easier to get on and off BUT a 40 foot rig required a lot of material! Maybe two tarps with overlap would work. Silver side up, of course.
  • I look at it this way, if you are young enough, consider the amount of money you'll spend on covers through a lifetime of RV'ing. If your area allows it, it may be better to just go ahead and build an RV garage (at least a cheap metal building).
  • I always have someone with my when I'm covering my rig. It's just too far a fall if something happens.
  • You may want to have someone who you trust help you put the cover on. My DW helped me before we started storing indoors. JMO

The more you keep the sun off it the longer it lasts and looks great.
