We never make reservations. We never know what adventure we'll find along the way or places we want to spend an extra day at.
My wife will start calling campgrounds when we are a few hours out. If we can find a campground on Cape Cod on 4th of July weekend everything else is a piece of cake.
We called Yellowstone Fishing Bridge campground and got a cancellation spot a couple hours out. West Yellowstone was our back up. After staying at FB I wish it had been all filled up, but that's another story.
BTW, Yellowstone has a couple of first come first serve campgrounds which are really nice.
