You are definitely on the right track. In general, I don't make reservations unless:
1) Spending a week or more at any campground. That's because I'll span the weekend and it's rare to have one campsite free for an uninterrupted week on one spot.
2) Destination travel. This depends on the season, but if I'm traveling with the crowds, I'll reserve in advance.
3) If there are very few campgrounds in the area I want to stay or only one can accommodate my rig.
For overnight travel or non busy weekday travel, I wouldn't even consider making reservations. When I'm looking for a place to stop for the evening, I'm never exactly sure when I'll be tired and ready to stop. I'd rather plan that within one or two hours of stopping.
For boondocking, Walmart is fine, but Camping World, Cabellas and other big box stores are even better. Best yet, try a museum parking lot. If you are a member of Escapees, download their Days End guide. Also, join Harvest Hosts. I've stayed in the parking lot of a winery one time and my friend let me boondock in his church parking lot for a week. Be creative.
